Fixing the Bonavita 8 Cup

Ive been having a reoccurring issue with my coffee machine for the last two or so years. It would run for a bit and then stop even though the water reservoir was still not empty.

Ive tried twice to descale it with mixed success but the issue never goes away completely and always comes back. This is an SCA certified coffee maker so I didn’t feel like spending $300+ to get a modern equivalent model.

Luckily this managed to get it running like new.

I’ve had BV1902DW since 2020.

img_8412 Hey look, the last purchase I made before I switch to WFH permanently!

I’ve replaced the shower head with the cafe model one that holds the basket and it’s been making me coffee nearly daily since then.

The fix was pretty easy. Remove the bottom screws, which requires a Nintendo(c) triangle screw driver bit.

After that I could see that the water flow is reservoir -> tube -> heating tube -> shower head. taking of just the 3 circled screws is enough to clean everything.

I took a pipe cleaner to the tube and used a bottle brush and barkeepers friend to the heating tube. There was so much scale building in this that I think either the temperature sensor was being thrown off or the scale wasn’t allowing water to flow in fast enough.

Since there’s no water level sensor I’m assuming that if the heating element gets too hot it assumes it’s empty of water and shuts off. Thanks techhonology connections for giving me background on this type of thing. I wouldn’t be surprised if there was our old friend the bi-metal strip somewhere in there.

fix, coffee
